Kortney Opshaug is the CEO of Blue Ocean Gear, a California-based technology company focused on Smart Buoys for commercial fishing feets to track gear on the ocean. The data from these products allow harvesters to know where their gear is at all times, reducing gear loss and fuel use, while also providing critical information for fsheries and adjacent ocean industries. She founded the company in 2015 and has led the growth of the business and product development through close collaboration with fshers throughout North America, as well as fostered partnerships with the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, Canada’s DFO, and NOAA. Today, Blue Ocean Gear has delivered over 700 Smart Buoys to fisheries around North America, providing data-driven insights to customers, and is positioned to scale the business in new markets.
